0 to 1 is mostly editing — you just don't have anything to edit yet.

The romance of the blank page has sold a generation of founders a lie. The job isn't invention. It's ruthless subtraction, performed at speed, in public, with strangers watching.

There is a particular kind of founder energy that treats 0 to 1 as a creative séance. Whiteboards. Sticky notes. A weekend retreat where someone brings a guitar. The implication is always the same: that going from nothing to something requires a special kind of generative magic that ordinary product work does not.

It doesn't. 0 to 1 is editing. The only difference is that, at the start, the manuscript is whatever falls out of your head in the first two weeks — and most of it is bad.

Where the time actually goes

Ask any honest founder how their first six months went and the story is the same. Two weeks of euphoric building. Four months of cutting. The cutting is where the product is made. The building was just raw material — a draft no one would ever read.

We don't talk about it this way because cutting doesn't demo well. You cannot show an investor the seventeen features you killed. You can only show the three you kept, and pretend you always knew which three they would be.

The myths that keep teams stuck

"We need to ideate more." No, you need to throw away nine of the twelve ideas you already have. Ideating more is the comfort food of teams afraid to commit.

"We don't know enough yet." You will never know enough. The only way to learn is to ship something embarrassing and watch what people do with it.

"Let's make sure it's polished." Polish is the last 5%. Applying it at 30% is how you build a beautiful thing nobody wants.

"It needs to be defensible." At 0 to 1, defensibility is a story you tell yourself to feel safe. The only moat is whether the next ten users care enough to come back.

Why editing is harder than inventing

Inventing is generous. You give yourself permission to imagine. Editing is unkind. You have to look at a thing you made, sometimes a thing you love, and admit it doesn't earn its place. New founders confuse this discomfort for a signal that they shouldn't cut. It is, in fact, the only reliable signal that they should.

The teams that ship are not the ones with the best ideas. They are the ones who can kill their own work without filing a grievance against themselves.

A practical reframe

Treat your first month as drafting. Write fast, write loose, write more than you need. Then treat every week after that as an edit pass. What is the one thing this product is for? What pulls focus away from that thing? Cut it. Not next sprint. Now.

"If you can't describe your product in one honest sentence, you haven't finished editing. You've finished inventing."

The reason 0 to 1 feels so much like editing is because it is editing. You're just editing against a manuscript you wrote three weeks ago instead of one a publisher sent you. The skill is the same. The pace is faster. The stakes feel higher because there's no fallback draft. There never is.
